Changing Blog Sites, Again.

Hi all,

So I've been on Blogger.com for a little over two years and while I had no major problems with them, I've decided to consolidate my active blogs at WordPress. I have a new update schedule starting with the new year, so hopefully I will stay on that. My new blogs (and proposed schedule) are as follows:

• Stop the World... (too) - http://stoptheworldtoo.wordpress.com/ - This is my personal blog. Hopefully updated Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

• Adventures in SpEd - http://adventuresinsped.wordpress.com/ - My reflections on my classes in special education and my experiences in the classroom. Hopefully updated Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays.

• Scribble, Scribble - http://scribblescribble.wordpress.com/ - Creative Writing blog. Hopefully updated occasionally. These posts may take the place of my personal blog.

So, this will likely be my last post at blogger.com. It's been fun!

How Time Flies....

It's been awhile since I've done an actual blog post on here. I have another blog (which also hasn't been updated in awhile) which is meant to chronicle my Adventures in Special Education. Lots of things have happened over the summer and into the fall and I'll attempt to log them here:

• I found out I would no longer have a job with the Mukilteo School District this fall. I found this out in February, which made what came next a lot easier.

• I applied and was accepted to the University of Washington program in Special Education: High Incidence. This is basically (for me) a program in which I will receive my Special Education endorsement and is geared toward teaching those with learning disabilities. It's pretty much what I did in the Bronx, but this time I may have a clue what I'm doing!

• Mandy and Darren got married!! I spent six weeks in Jersey leading up to the wedding. It was awesome - a totally perfect day. 82 and sunny, not too humid (for Jersey, in August), and everything ran smoothly. Mandy looked incredible in her dress, Darren looked nervous (but he loosened up), and the reception hall was a-maz-ing! We had a lot of fun. It's weird, though, now Mandy doesn't have the same last name as me. Oh well, I'm just happy they are finally married. Congrats you two!! Now, get started on those little nieces and nephews!!

• I started school at the end of September. So far, I am three weeks in and it's a heck of a lot harder than NYU. However, that's a good thing. I always thought that NYU was a bit overrated and the program was a bit dumbed down, so this is refreshing. Of course, it could also be that I've been out of school for four years - the longest I've been out of school since I was a toddler. Oh well, I'm learning a lot and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Only three and a half more quarters to go!

That's about it. I'm heading off to class in a few minutes, last one for the week. I really enjoy my Fridays off. So do the dogs, who take the opportunity to snuggle and sleep on my bed. Life is good.

A Relfection on Life

A few years ago, I was taking a class that required that I see at least two theatrical shows during the course of the semester. At that time, "A Streetcar Named Desire" was playing on Broadway and I thought "What a great opportunity to see a classic!" I'd read the play before and ha seen part of the movie, but never had I seen the stage show. So, I dragged Mandy along (not like she was too upset) and we went to see it.
Stanley was played by John C. Reilly and he was fabulous. Mostly, I'd only seen him in the funny role, or that of the loser. In this, though, he brought a vulnerability to Stanley that I hadn't seen before. However, the real star of the show was Natasha Richardson, who played the southern diva, Blanche. She played it with such emotion that you wanted to cry for her. How could this lovely woman have fallen so low? What would happen to her?
That's why, I think, her sudden death this past week bothered me so much. I enjoyed her in various movies, especially "The Parent Trap" remake, but the ability to bring out that much emotion and pity is truly amazing. She was a lovely woman, wife, and mother, and she will be missed.
Life is crazy - you never know when it will suddenly end. Don't leave things for later, because you never know if you will even have a later. Live life fully and completely, it's the only way.

Inauguration Day, at last

It's no secret that I have democratic leanings. I've voted Democrat in every presidential election since my first one in 1996. What may not be known is that I've been following this little known junior senator from Chicago since he made his first national speech at the Democratic Convention in 2004. I was captivated by this man who spoke eloquently and made me want to listen to what he had to say. Less than two years later, I eagerly watched that same man announce his candidacy for president in Springfield, Illinois. Over 20 months, I watched him change from a little known senator without a prayer to our president-elect.
And now, finally, he'll be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States. It's a great day for us all. For the African-American community, the last major wall has been torn down. There is finally someone that a black child can look up to besides rap stars and athletes, neither of which are usually good role models.
Even more, though, I see Obama as a uniting force. We've been divided for too long and it's hurt our country. I've heard people, sworn Republicans, say that while they may not agree with his politics, they are hopeful for the future. We need a leader like him today - one who can see all sides of a matter, one who listens to those around him, one who admits that he may not have all the answers but is willing to find them.
So, I'm jealous of the million plus people gathering in Washington DC to watch this momentous occasion, even if it is freezing. Good luck, President Obama. The nation is behind you.

A little update

Not a lot going on in my world. A couple of updates:

• Toby had his big boy surgery last week, had the sutures taken out yesterday, and he's doing really well. Now he needs a bath and a haircut.
• Work is going well, but busy. I've had 31 kids in the last two weeks. Normally in that period of time, I would have had 8-10. It's the end of the semester and people are transferring all over the place. The top three out of Washington place that students come from: California (no surprise there), Las Vegas, and Iowa. Iowa? Seriously, I've had four from Iowa since November. Too weird.
• I got a new, much more accurate scale and weighed myself. Since last January, I've lost 23 pounds! Woot me!
• The Obama Inauguration is on Tuesday. I'm sure I'll have something to say about that. I know three people going to the inauguration in DC.
• George Bush made his farewell address last night. Man, I wish I lived in the America he described. It sounds like a pretty nice place!

Ah well, back to work, even though it's a bit of a slow day. That's okay though, I needed a slow day after the craziness lately.

To Resolve or Not to Resolve

Every time this year, people make a list of resolutions that they know they are going to follow and make their lives better. "I will lose 20 pounds" or "I will eat healthier" are common ones. I wish there were some statistics about how many people actually fulfill their resolutions. My guess is the percentage isn't high. Oh, it's easy in January - you are determined and excited about change. But what about June? Often by summer, I've forgotten what my resolutions even are.

So that said, I'm resolving to to make any resolutions this year. Instead, I have a couple goals that I intend to work toward. This way, if I don't make the goal by December, I can look back and at least see the progress I made toward that goal and see how far I've come.

• Drop another dress size (or two) by Mandy's wedding.
• Pray more.
• Try to keep in touch with my East Coast friends more regularly.
• Train to run a race (not a marathon or anything like that, but maybe a 5K)
• Continue to gather information on Certification/Doctorate programs
• Give more to charity.

That's a pretty good list. It hits most of the major areas of my life pretty well and all of them are doable. Now, let's just see how long I stick with it!
